Event Details
The City of Cumberland, the Downtown Development Commission (DDC) and the Parks and Recreation Department extend an invitation to everyone for the 15th annual Groundhog Day Celebration at City Hall.
On Wednesday, February 2nd, Cumberland’s furry prognosticator, Murray, will be honored with the introduction of a new mascot who will help answer the question, “Will it be an early Spring or six more weeks of Winter?” On hand to interpret the prediction will be Mayor Raymond Morriss, City Council members and special guest, Bob Candy of the Tri-State Zoological Park. The program will begin at 7 a.m. with Mayor Morriss reading the Proclamation, and our new mascot will be making an appearance at sunrise, 7:22 a.m.
The event is open to all revelers who wish to view the prognostication from City Hall Plaza. Attendees can partake in coffee and hot chocolate from Café Mark as well as special Groundhog shaped cookies from M&M Bake Shop. WCBC Radio (1270 AM,103.1 FM and 107.1 FM) will also be broadcasting live.
A coloring contest is underway for youngsters, with a Groundhog themed prize pack for the most unique entry in each grade level (Pre-K through Grade 5). Coloring sheets are available in a number of ways:
- Download from the website
- Download from the Facebook page
- Pick up in-person from the Office of Community Development in the lower level of City Hall
All entries are due back no later than noon on Friday, January 31st and can be dropped off to the Community Development office, placed in the Drop Box in the lobby of City Hall, or emailed to: melinda.kelleher@cumberlandmd.gov.
