Program Description
Event Details
Join us at the Washington Street Library as we re-dedicate the Mary Walsh Plaque and Children’s Room in honor of Mary Gertrude Walsh (1893–1982). A librarian of gentle presence and steadfast devotion, Miss Walsh touched the lives of countless visitors—many still fondly remember visiting the library and seeing Miss Walsh. From 1923 to 1963, she built Cumberland’s first public library, guiding it from a small office on Greene Street with 1,650 books to its current home in the historic Allegany County Academy on Washington Street.
The public is welcome to attend and hear brief remarks from library officials, family members, and special guests. Light refreshments will be served following the program. Celebrate with us as we honor the legacy of a librarian whose influence continues to inspire generations of Allegany County residents.
