Join this open discussion of local responses to the collection Appalachian Reckoning: A Region Responds to Hillbilly Elegy, which responds to J.D. Vance's book Hillbilly Elegy to explore a more complex view of Appalachia. Participants are invited to read excerpts and offer responses to particular essays, poems, or photography from the collection. Or, those attending can share their own creative responses that offer unique perspectives that "reckon with" Vance's view of what it means to be from Appalachia. Copies of Harkins and McCarroll's collection are available at the county libraries and bookstores, and a podcast is available at https://www.wvpublic.org/post/appalachian-reckoning-writers-respond-jd-vance-s-hillbilly-elegy#stream/0. This session will be facilitated by members of the Allegany County Library System and the Allegany County Choose Civility chapter.
